Tick, Tock – It's a Clock! In-Person
Join Dr. Donald D. Driscoll, Jr., physics professor from Kent State University Ashtabula, for a presentation on astronomical time and how it relates to the seasons. These, in turn influenced agriculture and human culture across time and geographic space.
Our modern world is dominated by an obsession with controlling time. We have alarm clocks and scheduling apps to keep us on time to the minute and our GPS relies on timing of less than a microsecond to tell us where we are. For most of human history, though, we haven’t had the technology to measure time so precisely. In fact, the natural world has built-in clocks that our bodies have been designed to respond to. We will investigate how the sky sets some of our most basic timescales and how futile our attempts have been to bend those natural scales into regular, scientific intervals.
