Solving the 160-Year Old Mystery of the Origin of the Rebel Yell In-Person
To mark the 160th anniversary of the end of the Civil War on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox, VA we bring you a mystery solved. The origin of the 'Rebel Yell', often called the "Sound of the South," that iconic primal scream used by Confederate soldiers when charging into battle, has been lost to the mists of time. It is often assumed to have been an homage to Native war whoops or animal sounds. Using actual surviving recordings of this mysterious sound and other surprising sounds, as well as 19th century agricultural maps and cultural analysis, our Adult Education Coordinator presents her original research tracking the roots of the famed battle cry. She'll discuss the findings of her research, and their importance.
